Female protagonistAs a man, I tend to create male protagonists. I rarely used women as protagonists, but they were very short stories, 300 words long. I want to talk, however, about how to create a protagonist of the opposite sex to your own for a long story or even a novel. Here, this is precisely the point: how to create it? Did you think I would give you the solution? I don't have it either, so I can't give it. Among my ideas is a novel with a woman as the protagonist. At that point what to do? The main problem is that I, as a man, can know with almost absolute certainty how a man might behave in certain circumstances.
But a woman? I have no idea, I could only speculate. Thinking about how to solve this dilemma, I came up with ideas, four in total, that can help me both in the creation of the character and in his behavior Special Data during the development of the story. Asking a woman for advice : it seems to me to be the most appropriate solution. When reading On Writing by Stephen King, the American writer also did this. In reality this idea came from there, let's be honest. Stephen King made his wife read to him, or perhaps when they were still engaged, if I remember correctly, her texts and she gave him advice on female characters. Who knows better than a woman how to reason with a woman? Read novels with women as protagonists : better if written by female authors.
In this way we will be able to understand something about female psychology and philosophy. Learn how they speak. How they react to situations. See films with women as protagonists : as above, basically. Hoping to come across films that have been able to portray women at their best, we can take inspiration and lessons on how to build our character. Observing the women we know : what's better than everyday reality? Observing mothers, sisters, wives, girlfriends, friends and acquaintances will help us greatly in developing our character. The problem, if anything, will arise if in our case the protagonist is a murderer or in any case a figure totally distant from those around us.
